Kansas City Public Library Is Active In Social Media
I was really happy to get a notice in my inbox today of a new user following my twitter account. The Kansas City Public Library.
We are lucky to have a library system in our community that is so proactive in so many ways. Last month they recieved a 2008 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries, at a White House ceremony.
Using Twitter to try and get out the information about the wide selection of events going on at the library is a fantastic move. They have also benefitted from a recent website design featuring a blog on the front page, open for comments and user interactions.
People in this city are starting to “get it” in regards to social media and the results are going to be very exciting to see.

Yes, I was also very happy to hear about the library’s foray into social media. However, upon asking them to keep me informed, they pointed me to their web site event listings.
Communication needs to be proactive on their part. It shouldn’t require me to be proactive in going to their site to get the new event schedule. “Feed” me, baby.
I registered for their newsletter a few weeks ago, but have yet to receive any correspondence.
So, although it is a step in the right direction, they need to keep steppin!’

Bob, we are in agreement. I always like to point out these bigger or more public organizations using social media because it is harder make it happen when there are a lot of cooks in any org’s kitchen. The hard part is taking those first steps. You hope that this is movement in the right direction…hopefully they keep listening to users like yourself giving them great feedback.
